Friday Favorites – School Edition | Melissa | 8/14/20

Hey everyone! I thought it would be fun to do a “school edition” of Friday Favorites today. The things I have listed here include a few things that I’ve had for a while and some that I bought over the spring to get us through quarantine and enhance my girls’ learning!

  1. My girls were gifted these Highlights magazines a few years ago from their grandma. They LOVED getting them in the mail and they would be a great resource to supplement learning! There are stories, activities and crafts that will help keep them busy. I’m also looking into a getting National Geographic magazine subscription this year!

2. The geoboards are great. Learning about geometry and shapes are a second grade math standard, and my girls had a blast with these. I would say, “Make an isosceles triangle or a triangle with a right angle”. They would be great for younger kids too – just for being creative and practicing simple shapes.

3. Ok – let me have my Spanish teacher moment here. 🙂 Duolingo is an app where you can practice learning a language. You can select if you are a child or adult. I put it on the girls’ iPods and it was pretty neat to see what they were learning. I plan to build this into our curriculum time and I’m going to learn French! I’ve wanted to for a long time!

4. This Money bags game is great! Money is also a second grade math standard, so having this was really helpful for my girls to learn more about the coins, making change, etc. It would be great for younger kids too – to help teach them about the individual coins, etc.

5. We love this Melissa and Doug state puzzle. It was a gift a few years ago, and they were just putting it together again yesterday! It’s great for practicing geography and also learning the capitals. It’s a big puzzle and has nice big pieces.

6. Last, but definitely NOT least is this Nancy Drew starter kit. Nancy Drew books were my favorite as a child. I remember sneaking a flashlight into my room to read these in bed after I was supposed to be sleeping. Well, we have some of the old books and now I’ve got my girls hooked. They are still to young to read them alone (they are 8.5) but we read these to them most nights and they are hooked. Nancy Drew is a great role model and they are page turners!
