Veggie Black Bean Burgers

We are excited to share these Veggie Black Bean Burgers on Artisan Hearth brioche buns with you all! Many of our dinners and lunches include meat, so we want to start sharing more vegetarian and vegan options. Especially ones that can be a main course and not just a side. Neither of us are vegetarians, but we do like to eat plant-based protein when we can. We are also always looking for ways to incorporate more veggies and plant-based protein into our diets and these Veggies Black Bean Burgers are perfect!

Katie has tried so many different black bean burger and veggie burger recipes. This one is by far her favorite. They have veggies, are easy to make, freeze well, and are easy to reheat! They are also gluten free and can be made dairy free.

Village Hearth

With a bakery right here in Sun Prairie, we thought it would be a great opportunity to partner with Village Hearth and use their buns for this recipe! They also have state-of-the-art, quality controlled bakeries in St. Cloud, Minnesota and Fargo, North Dakota. They are a sustainable business and make every effort to limit waste. Their goal is to make everything recyclable – from their bags to the twist ties. They are also a sponsor of Second Harvest Heartland (the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger-relief organization), and every year, donate over 1 million loaves of bread and other bread products.

Grilling out?

So next time you’re having people over to grill out, but want a plant-based option or know someone who doesn’t eat meat, these Veggie Black Bean Burgers would be a great option. They would also pair great with our Sweet Potato Fries and Sriracha Aioli. Try making them ahead of time, throwing them in the freezer (see picture below – but using parchment paper is a great way to freeze them), and then popping them on the grill with the rest of the meat. If you aren’t grilling out, you could also just bake them in the oven per the recipe below. Once you bake them, you can easily reheat them in the over or even in the toaster!

Ok, that’s it! Here is the recipe!

Veggie Black Bean Burgers

Course dinner, lunch
Cuisine American
Servings 6 patties

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped red pepper
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp BBQ sauce
  • 1 Tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup feta
  • salt/pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive or in a skillet on the stove over medium-high heat.
  • Add garlic, red pepper, and onion and saute until soft – about 6 minutes.
  • Transfer the garlic/red pepper and garlic mixture to a food processor and add in all the rest of the ingredients except the bread crumbs. PULSE – DO not blend.
  • After you have pulsed a few more times, add in the bread crumbs and pulse a few more times. You just want to make sure to not over blend so the consistency is correct.
  • Form your black bean burger into patties by scooping out about 3/4 cup into your hands, forming them into a ball.
  • Squish them down on a baking sheet lined with (oil sprayed) parchment paper until they are the shape and size you like for your patties. You can also use a burger press! We have one and it works well!
  • Let them chill in the refrigerator with saran wrap over them for at least 1 hour. Then bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees, flipping halfway through.
